| The fiscal budget for the year 2009/10 has envisioned Nepal as an attractive venue of international as well as regional convention center.
To meet the target the budget has planned preparation to observe Nepal Tourism Year 2011 with the aim of bringing one million tourists into Nepal through the campaign of "Nepali Temperament, Welcome and Hospitality of Guest" slogan. Under this program, package will be developed to attract tourists with the partnership of successful organization and institution of tourism sector and dissemination as well as publicity task will be carried out. According to Finance Minister Surendra Pandey, an interaction with all climbers of Mt. Everest will be conducted in coming fiscal year. The budget has also removed the provision of Tourism Service Fee from July 16, 2009 which was collected as income source of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) to implement its programs. An arrangement will be made in such a way that NTB could reach an agreement with airline companies to collect Rs. 1000 per passenger at air ticket itself effective from that date. Additional places for Paragliding and Rafting, which are attractive for extending the stay of foreign tourists coming to Nepal and also for internal tourists, will be expanded. Paragliding at Gheralik of Arghakhanchi and feasibility study of Rafting operation will be carried out at Balefi to Chatara and Ramdighat to Narayanghat. The budget also aims to promote Birat area, Bideha area, Sahales area, Simroun area and Lumbini area in Terai Madhes and Karnali-Chisapani area as tourism spots. Pathivara, Barah area, Pasupatinath, Manakamana, Muktinath, Sorgadwari and Mallikarjun were also been promoted as seven Spiritual Destinations. Private sector will be promoted to construct traveler guest house to facilitate spiritual tourists in Barah area, Gosaikunda, Khaptad Lake, Tribeni, Chhanna Marga and Resunga Pokhari area. Special attention will be given for tourism development of Muktinath area to Damodar lake. A feasibility study will be carried out to operate Cable Car in Muktinath area. Emphasis will be given to complete the construction of physical infrastructure at Lumbini. Special programs will be carried out for the promotion and conservation of lakes and ponds which are the ancient assets of touristic resource. Tourism development works like, database preparation of the lakes of Nepal and conservation of lakes, will be completed. Ring road construction work at Doti- Achham portion and Bajura-Bajhang portion of Khaptad area will be initiated. Route to touch the Khaptad area of Bajhang, Doti, Achham and tourism trekking route of Bajura and Khaptad Surma, Khaptad Ure glen, Khaptad Ramarosan trekking route will be improved. "Art Village" will be developed in the area of Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Lapcha, Limbu and Dhimal inhabitants. I have allocated necessary amount to construct and develop the Sukhani area as infrastructure for tourism area development where freedom fighters had attained martyrdom at the time of historic Jhapa revolt. Installation work of new radar in Tribhuvan International Airport will be initiated to make the flights reliable and systematic. Runway will be expanded to minimize the air traffic problems in Tribhuvan International Airport. Construction of International Airport in Nijgadh of Bara will be started with high priority. Construction work of regional airport at Pokhara and Lumbini will be initiated. Regional and other important airports in view of touristic perspective located in hill and himali area, will be continued. The government has also allotted Rs. 250 million for up grading all airports of Rajbiraj, Janakpur and Humla, Mugu, Kalikot and Dolpa of Karnali zone and Rs. 100 million for extension of Dhangadi airport. Airport of Simara and Dhangadi will be developed and equipped for landing and take off during night time. |

| GANGTOK: 14TH JULY:Courtesy:Chewan Dahal: The Sikkim government today assured it had taken necessary steps to tackle any situation arising out of the GJMM sponsored indefinite bandh in the Darjeeling hills. The bandh has affected movement on National Highway 31A, the lifeline to Sikkim.
The East district administration today formed several committees to check price hike, hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities in the state. The teams comprising of state police officials, magistrates, and members of the business community today discussed ways to ensure continuous and controlled supply of essential commodities throughout the bandh. The meeting chaired by Mr D Anandan, collector, East district formulated action plans in regard to supply and rates of petrol, diesel, LPG, grocery and vegetable. Mr Anandan informed that, leaving emergency services like fire, police, milk supply and VIP vehicles, fuel would be rationed for all other vehicles. The police, food and civil supplies officials would monitor the controlled issuance of fuel in all petrol pumps throughout the state. In addition to these a flying squad comprising of Sub-Divisional Magistrates and SDPOs would maintain regular vigil to ensure smooth rationing of auto fuel.Mr. Anandan further informed that the state presently had over 17,000 LPG cylinders in stock at theLPG bottling plant at Rangpo. To avoid shortage due to prolonged closure, the state government would provide LPG cylinders to those with valid documents in an interval of 21 days. The east district administration further appealed the people to curtail unnecessary fuel usage and also suggested car pools to co-operate with the government in its crisis management measures. The SP, East district urged all to keep a tab on any relaxation of the bandh. Interestingly, the Sikkim Marketing Federation (SIMFED), a state government undertaking, has volunteered to sell locally grown vegetables at reasonable rates through its makeshift outlets at the Lall market here in the capital. A team comprising of vegetable sellers and bazaar officials would monitor vegetable rates on a daily basis.A circular issued by the state chief secretary Mr ND Chingapa today mentioned that all officers using vehicles be instructed to avoid undertaking tours unless essential and those living in vicinity of their offices consider walking to their work places in public interest. The chief secretary has also asked the heads of departments to avoid summoning their district officers to the headquarters for meetings etc. during the bandh. |

GANGTOK, 31 MAY: Sikkim is all set to boost its tourism industry with highly trained manpower. The Travel Agents´ Association of Sikkim (TAAS), the tour operators’ body, has branched out its venture to train local youths through a dedicated institute. Earlier known for its courageous rescue operations to help accident-trapped or stranded tourists, the TAAS has now set up a fully equipped training institute here in Gangtok. The institute will aim at producing local human resources for tourism and allied industries are prepared to provide training to tour operators, guides and other tourism related professionals in the Himalayan state, where tourism is the mainstay industry. The TAAS, the two decade-old tour operators’ body, has seven of its members recognized as inbound tour operators by the Tourism Ministry: a record number in northeast India. The TAAS training institute was officially inaugurated by the State Tourism Board chairman, Mr NK Subba, and the first batch of 25 youths commenced their training on Saturday.As per the training programme, sponsored by the state tourism department, the TAAS will be offering month-long training to 25 youths who will be familiarized with alpine trekking and be given other basic knowledge of tourism product. The trainees representing all parts of the state are set to be exposed to the ever-changing world of tourism during the training period. Study visits and treks to high altitude tourism spots like Green Lake and Dzongri is also included in the training module, while first-aid and safety methods at high altitudes would also be taught as a pre-requisite. To woo foreign tourists, and make them feel comfortable, tourism apprentices would also be taught foreign languages. Interestingly, the TAAS has decided to place meritorious trainees into the tour agencies run by its members. The president of the TAAS, said “Along with the state government and Chief Minister Pawan Chamling who has prioritised the tourism sector, we have succeeded in attracting tourists and making Sikkim the most favourable tourism destination in the nation. “Because the Chief Minister has given priority to tourism, we - as members of the TAAS - feel encouraged and committed to serve the tourists and make Sikkim the best possible destination. "Since May 2001, the TAAS has sent more than 1.1 lakh tourists to Nathu La and has deposited Rs 1.3 crore to the state exchequer. This is our biggest achievement." Reiterating the state government´s commitment to tourism in Sikkim, Mr NK Subba, State Tourism Board chairman, said that it is the responsibility of every person in the state to maintain the tourist-friendly image of Sikkim. “Everybody must participate for the growth of tourism here,” he said. To this end, the state government has declared 2010 as “Tourism Year” and the TAAS has already started planning and preparation for the same. |
