Sikkim Express:GANGTOK, November 1: The 69 year old American trekker John M. Campbell who died on October 28 of high altitude sickness during the Dzongri trek was cremated with Buddhist rituals at Yuksom, with a large gathering present for the funeral on Friday. Campbell had died while returning back from the Dzongri trek at Phedang on October 28 and the body was brought to Yuksom from Tshoka just below the base camp after the trek to high altitude 4, 200 metre Dzongri trek route in west Sikkim, the next day. The decision to have cremation at Yuksom was made with the consent of the deceased’s 48 year old daughter Tamara Campbell who was accompanying him for the trek. Jamling Norgay, the son of the first Everester Tenzing Sherpa who was also present at the funeral, said that people of Yuksom, stakeholders of the tourism industry in Sikkim and the religious monks helped in the cremation of the trekker. He thanked them for the immense support. Monks from Dubdi, the oldest monastery of Sikkim performed the last rites and rituals. It may be recalled that Campbell had gone to trek to Dzongri along with his daughter and nine other Americans. Cambell’s death had been attributed to old age, ill-health and breathing problems in the high altitude areas along the Dzongri trail. The ten member US group had embarked on the trek along the famed Dzongri route from October 22. |

Referring the frequent landslides in the hills, an octogenarian ex- DHR employee, Mr D B Thapa, who was felicitated on the occasion, issued a note of caution. “The unimpeded traffic flow involving heavy vehicles along the fragile hills might bring about natural calamities of grimmer magnitude in future.
